Jury Satisfaction Study
Investigating Juror Satisfaction in Australia—Research Project
Criminology Research Council Project
Are jurors satisfied with their jury experience or do they avoid it? This study examines how well jurors are informed before they come to court, how they are treated on arrival and briefed about their task, what they think of their food, remuneration, and jury facilities. It also asks how jurors rate the performance of judges and lawyers. Looking at the states of NSW, Victoria and South Australia, the study includes as key stakeholders the jury managers in those states, judges, prosecutors and defence counsel. The study draws on one of the best recent jury studies in Australia, the doctoral dissertation of project member Jacqui Horan which showed that jurors were generally happy with their service, but complained about too much legal jargon, asked for more access to transcripts and were unaware they could ask questions.
